This certificate will prepare the student to enter the workforce in only one year. Skills taught include medical terminology, computer applications, insurance processing, and medical records. If the student decides to continue to obtain a degree, the courses in this certificate are also included in the Medical Office Assistant degree.
From the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
Medical secretaries/office assistants transcribe dictation, prepare correspondence, and assist physicians or medical scientists with reports, speeches, articles, and conference proceedings. They also record simple medical histories, arrange for patients to be hospitalized, and order supplies. Most medical secretaries must be familiar with insurance rules, billing practices, and hospital or laboratory procedures. Other technical secretaries who assist engineers or scientists may prepare correspondence, maintain their organization’s technical library, and gather and edit materials for scientific papers.
According to state data, medical secretary positions will grow 11% from 2020-2030 in the Kaskaskia College district. The median salary for someone in this field is $28,557.
