Function
The Student Mentor will provide assistance to the functions of the Centralia Community Youth Center during the hours of the after-school program by aiding the children with homework they receive from school, work provided by the center from their folders, reading in the library, or other activities to enhance the overall student experience. This job is performed at the Centralia Community Youth Center.
Organizational Relationship:
Reports to the Student Outreach Coordinator with on-site coordination through the CCYC Director of Programming.

Required:
- Completed high school diploma or equivalent
- Full time enrollment in good academic standing in program of study at Kaskaskia College
Preferred:
- Education major
Expectations:
Working with children, you are expected to carry yourself to a certain level. Listed below are the expectations you are to hold yourself to.
- Respect your coworkers. Talk to each other how you would expect the children to speak to you.
- NO PROFANITY OR VULGAR LANGUAGE
- No physical contact
- Be patient while helping the children. Learning new skills can be confusing and frustrating.
- Be encouraging. Positivity is encouraging and motivating.
- Talk to the children with respect. They will never respect you if you don’t show respect for them.
- Do not give the children the answers to their homework. Help them get to the answer in a productive way.
- If a child does not require help, check work after they have completed it.
- Circle wrong answers, if any, and return the paper to the child so they can correct the answer.
- The children are forbidden from using calculators, which includes the calculators on their phone. You are expected to enforce this when working with the children.
- Do not let the children help each other. It results in them giving each other the answers.
- If a child decides to do reading, do not read the book to them.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position will report to the Coordinator of Student Outreach with some supervisory oversight offered by the Director of Programming at the Centralia Community Youth Center.
Supervisory Controls:
Expected to be able to perform job duties with minimal supervision. Consultation with the KC Coordinator of Student Recruitment and CCYC Director of Programs as needed.
Guidelines:
We are working with young, impressionable, children. How we present ourselves reflects on the concentration participants have. We need to ensure we present ourselves respectfully. Please obey the list provided below.
- No vulgar or inappropriate pictures, logos, or words on shirts.
- Shorts, skirts, and dresses need to be of respectful length. As close to fingertip length as possible.
- Low cut shirts are not allowed.
- No tank tops.
- No undergarments, underwear or any part of the bra should be visible.
- Clothes must be clean.
Personal Relationships:
Position has daily contact with members of the Centralia Community Youth Center staff and volunteer team.
