This course focuses on the assessment and care of the female patient, the newborn, the pediatric patient, and the geriatric patient. Prehospital management of the obstetric female and neonatal patient is discussed in detail. Management of sick or injured children is emphasized. Paramedics must recognize that although children make up a relatively small portion of the patients cared for by the EMS system, their unique needs require specialized preparation and responses. Additionally, the course will detail the assessment and management of geriatric patients because the practice of paramedics in the 21st century will focus heavily on the special problems and needs of the elderly.
