Paramedic II is the second course in the sequence necessary for completion of the Paramedic Program. This course builds on the medical concepts learned in Paramedic I and integrates prior learning with enhanced advanced life support concepts and skills. Through a variety of didactic (online and in-class) and simulation laboratory experiences, students will gain knowledge required of a paramedic, with emphasis placed on patient assessment and recognition of significant findings, pre-hospital diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment strategies, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology. Topics include the management of respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies, neurological emergencies, endocrine and metabolic emergencies, gynecological emergencies, gastrointestinal/genitourinary emergencies, hematological emergencies, immunologic emergencies, infectious diseases, and diseases of eyes, ears, nose, and throat. Other medical topics include toxicological emergencies and psychiatric emergencies. The lecture component expands previous knowledge of foundational principles of EMS to the level of the advanced clinician. A laboratory experience is included in this course to provide a more robust learning experience in topics of the course. The course closely integrates theory with laboratory practice, thus providing the foundational base from which the learner may develop psychomotor skills, knowledge, and judgment of the paramedic by studying the different medical situations to gain a high level of understanding through discussion, learning activities, case studies, skills, and simulation in the class and lab environment. Prerequisites: Successful completion of PARM-101 with 80% or higher.
