This course focuses on statistical reasoning and the solving of problems using real-world data rather than on computational skills. Topics include: data collection processes (types of studies, experimental design, sampling techniques, and bias), descriptive methods (frequency distributions and graphing and measures of location and variation), basic probability theory (sample spaces, counting, factorials, combinations, permutations and probability laws), probability distributions (normal distributions and normal curve, binomial distribution), statistical interference (confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, t-tests and chi-square tests, errors, and p values), correlation, least squares regression, and f-test and analysis of variance. Prerequisite: Math placement into MATH 136; or the completion of MATH 107 with a grade of C or better. Refer to placement chart in college catalog for detailed information.
