Illinois Queen Initiative Shows Appreciation for Kaskaskia College

The Illinois Queen Initiative held its 2014 Summer Class and Meeting on Saturday, June 28th from 12:00 to 5:00 pm at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus.

Lonnie Langley, IQI Director, opened the classroom meeting by welcoming everyone and introducing the instructors and speakers. The keynote speaker was Kent Williams, President of the Lake Barkley Beekeepers of Wingo, KY and Kent’s topic was selecting breeder stock. Kent is also a Past President of the Eastern Apicultural Society and an EAS Certified Master Beekeeper.

David Dhom, IQI Southern Director, gave a hands-on demonstration on the technique of grafting larvae for queen rearing. There was a short break and then a short IQI Board meeting in which it was decided to thank Kaskaskia College for the immense support of beekeeping; via making beekeeping classes available and providing a meeting and classroom location for the IQI and other beekeeping organizations. It was decided that the IQI would donate $100.00 to the Vandalia Campus to show their appreciation to KC President Jim Underwood, the KC Board of Directors, and the Vandalia Campus Director Mary Schulze for all they have done for the beekeeping world.

The class resumed with Terry Combs, IQI Webmaster and member of the International Bee Research Association, gave a PowerPoint presentation on queen rearing techniques for smaller beekeepers. A brief discussion followed and the meeting adjourned at 5:00 pm.

On Wednesday, July 2, Lonnie Langley and Terry Combs presented Mary Schulze with a check and our most sincere thanks for all she and KC have done for beekeepers.
