Kaskaskia College Horticulture Program Hosts Advisory Board Meeting

The Kaskaskia College Horticulture program hosted an Advisory Board meeting on March 5 at the College.  The purpose of Advisory Boards are to ensure that the program is meeting the needs of area employers as well as the needs of students.


Attending the meeting were:  Joe Mioux of Mioux Florist; Ryan Heimann of Grassroots; Liz Miller, extension educator, 4-H Youth Development for Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion and Washington Counties; Laurie George, Extension Educator Local Food Systems for Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion and Washington Counties; Tamara Gerstenecker, Agriculture Educator from Carlyle High School; Casey Bolin, Agriculture Educator from Sandoval High School; Tom Schwartz of Schwartz Orchard; Linda Duncan of CVS, Farmer Market Coordinator; Alex Eade of Southern Illinois Landscaping; Harry Braddock, Grounds and Maintenance for DuQuoin State Fairgrounds; Dr. Greg Labyak, Vice-president of Instructional Services for KC; George Evans, Dean of Career and Technical Education at KC; Dr. Scott Crothers, Dean of Student Success at KC, and Jenn Heinzmann, Horticulture Program Coordinator and Instructor at KC.


After a deli-style meal provided by the KC Culinary department, attendees introduced themselves and their occupations.  Discussion was centered around the future of the Horticulture program at KC and how it could best meet the needs of students and potential employers.

Topics included adapting the National and State model for Agricultural Education, new classes and renaming existing classes to broaden their appeal, new certificate programs, and suggestions for increasing enrollments in the program.


Attendees also took a tour of the greenhouse and the Agricultural Education Center, formerly the Animal Disease Laboratory on campus.​
