Kaskaskia College is proud to announce that Sandoval Schools was recently given the 2013 Educational Partnership Award.
The partnership between Kaskaskia College and Sandoval School District has been in place for many years, through the Dual Credit program, and more recently, through the College Now program, which began in 2007. The College Now program was the result of the need seen by the Sandoval administration to offer students more opportunities in the Career and Technical Education field. Both of these programs allow high school students to participate in College level courses both at the high school and on the KC campus without additional cost to the students. In addition, Sandoval has participated in a unique partnership with KC and two other high schools, in which the College’s Spanish faculty teaches classes at the high schools as dual credit offerings. During the implementation of these programs, both parties have worked together in a cooperative manner, which has greatly benefitted the students.
The College has also worked with Sandoval High School as a community partner in their School Improvement Grant. The first year of the grant, the College worked with the school to test high school students in Math, English, and Reading to determine which students might benefit from placement in transitional classes on the main campus. The placement data obtained was helpful in determining student needs and deficiencies. Additionally, the school wanted to be able to expand the cultural experiences for the students at the High School. In a collaborative effort to meet this goal, the College provided a guest speaker/artist whose art was on exhibit at the College to visit students at Sandoval High School and do a program with them. KC is also participating with Sandoval Schools as a community partner on a Physical Education Program grant. The College has committed to helping with an after school fitness program and to possibly offer guest speakers in the area of healthy snacks and nutrition. Currently, the grant is in the review process.
Sandoval has been an active participant in the KC Initiative on College Readiness. Sandoval faculty from both the Math and Language Arts areas have participated in faculty work groups and a representative serves on the Advisory Board.
This partnership provides opportunities for enriching student learning and benefitting the community in many ways. Kaskaskia College appreciates the opportunity to work with so many dedicated educators and is truly honored to present the 2013 Educational Partnership award to the Sandoval School District.
