The Veterans Tribute Committee is pleased to announce the Centralia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2055 has committed $10,000 to the Tribute project currently under construction on the main campus of Kaskaskia College. Post Commander Joe Loera and members of the VFW Board of Directors presented the first installment of that pledge to Tribute Co-Chair Jim Beasley and committee members Don Porter, Roy Aarons and Les Moulton.
“The Centralia VFW Post 2055 is unquestionably a vibrant component of the Centralia area community,” said Beasley. He noted the organization lobby’s Congress for better veteran’s health care and benefits, gives assistance to Veterans Administration Hospitals, conducts military funerals, and participates in education programs including sponsoring the Patriotism Award presented each year at Kaskaskia College’s graduation. “Each individual member has faithfully and obediently served in the U.S. military, but serving our country simply was not enough personal or patriotic fulfillments for this energetic group. They wanted to do more for fellow servicemen and women and more for their nation and community,” noted Beasley. “We sincerely acknowledge the membership of VFW Post 2055 for their generous contributions and praise them and their auxiliaries for continued patriotism and community endeavors.”
The Veterans Tribute committee has raised over $400,000 towards the project which will be built in three phases. The first phase, expected to be completed this summer, This phase includes two 6’ x 70’ walls with mounted black granite plates to accommodate 25,000 names; a sculptured American Eagle with a 10’ wing span mounted at the center of the Warriors Court; mounted seals of the five branches of the military services; American Flags and cherry trees on the perimeter of the Tribute. Once construction is completed, a dedication ceremony for the first phase is planned for this summer. The Tribute Committee is continuing to raise funds for phase one as well as the additional phases, including the selling of bricks to place in the warrior’s court with the eagle.
