Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a modality that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to generate an image used for assessment and diagnosis of various medical conditions.

The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) most recent edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook lists the diagnostic medical sonographer as an occupation that is separate and distinct from the radiology technologist at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos273.htm

Every October, SDMS and other sonography organizations join together to promote Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month to increase the public’s knowledge about sonography. This year’s SDMS design brings a fresh new look to one of our most popular slogans, image is everything. Join us by promoting Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month in your workplace and community! More information about Diagnostic Medical Sonography, as well as materials to promote Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, can be found at the SDMS website
