Veterans Tribute Fundraiser Held in Greenville

Members of the Veterans Tribute Committee held a fundraising event at Cunetto’s Restaurant in Greenville on Thursday, September 26.  The Veterans Tribute is currently under construction on the campus of Kaskaskia College near Centralia.

Potential donors and veterans were invited to join committee members for a presentation on the importance of the Veterans Tribute, with speakers including Mr. Robert Gaffner of Greenville, who organized the evening, Dr. Jim Underwood, President of Kaskaskia College, Mr. Travis Henson and Mr. Jim Beasly, co-chairs of the committee, and an emotional appeal from Michelle Baugh of Centralia who lost her father in Vietnam when she was a few months old and has become an advocate for veterans.

According to material circulated at the event, the Veterans Tribute at Kaskaskia College is to be built in three phases.  Phase one consists of two concrete walls with black granite plates affixed that hold the inscribed names of over 25,000 area veterans.  Phase one also includes the Warrior’s Court, a centerpiece dominated by a large bronze American bald eagle sculpture and surrounded by large bronze seals of the five branches of the United States military.  Phase one is currently nearing completion, with the walls, seals, and eagle sculpture in place.

Phase two will consist of three additional walls, while phase three will consist of an educational building, suitable for visits by students and citizens, where the stories of area veterans will be preserved for future generations.

The Veterans Tribute committee has established strict guidelines on the signage and name recognition for the tribute project.  In establishing the guidelines, the committee wants to ensure that proper recognition be given to those who have contributed to the project.  The committee has established several giving levels for donors which include the right to name the entire Tribute complex for $1 million, naming rights to all of the five walls for $250,000, individual walls for $50,000, or to have the educational building named for $350,000.  In addition, donors can be part of a list of One Star through Five Star donations for as little as $100 for the One Star designation to over $10,000 for a Five Star designation.  Sales of inscribed bricks that will be laid around the central court are also ongoing.
