Associate in Arts / English
Major
If you are thinking about
being an English major, be sure to follow the AA program sheet.
You also want to follow the link for the Illinois Articulation
Initiative to look at what specifically your university
requires. In general, most universities will require 2 years of
a foreign language or 4 years of high school foreign language.
In addition, most of the literature classes will transfer in as
gen. ed., though the 200-level will fulfill some of the major
requirements. That means that American and British survey
courses would be good options to consider. I also
recommend mythology--you'll be amazed at all of the literary
allusions you'll encounter. Our Shakespeare course is also
a very good suggestion; it may or may not substitute as a major
course depending on the university, but it is good food for the
soul nonetheless. Finally, I would recommend World
literature because most of us have a rather large lacuna in this
area from our high school preparations. What's nice about an
English major is that you will have lots of electives in your
curriculum. Obviously Introduction to Literature, Introduction
to Poetry, Introduction to Fiction, and Introduction to Drama
are wonderful courses to satisfy your appetite until you
transfer or to pique your interest in becoming an English major.

Education Major
There is a substantial difference between being an English major
and being a Secondary Education Major with English as your
area of specialization. If you are interested in being an
English teacher, see SuzieWurth, HB 138/ 545-3385. You will want to follow
the Education program of study and meet with the education
advisors at the university to which you are transferring as soon
as possible.
