Kaskaskia College to Host Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Kaskaskia College is proud to announce that on Tuesday, January 21, it will host its Annual Celebration honoring the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 
 
Keynote speaker for the celebration will be former Centralian Dr. Clara Rouse of California. 
 
Dr. Clara Coleman Rouse is an accomplished educator with extensive expertise in driving student achievement and operational excellence. Now retired, Dr. Rouse formerly served as Senior Vice President and Regional Operations Officer for EdisonLearning. She was responsible for all educational services including client relationships, student achievement and financial management for over 300,000 students served by EdisonLearning.
 
Prior to joining EdisonLearning in 2001, Dr. Rouse was a teacher and principal in Centralia City Schools from 1967 – 1996 when she was recruited to become Deputy Superintendent in Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto, CA.
 
Clara has been praised for her ability to recognize, appreciate and support teachers and instruction in the most fiscally responsible manner.  She seeks to motivate teams to go above and beyond while focusing on solutions. Dr. Rouse remains committed to making a difference in the lives of young people.
 
Today, she volunteers as a mentor and coach in the Phoenix Program working with challenged middle and high school students in Tracy Unified School District.  She is also a volunteer instructor in the 10th grade Student Discovery Program at Kimball High in Tracy.
 
Clara is active in People of Christ Missionary Baptist Church and the Tracy community. She serves on the Board of Trustees, Mother’s Board and secretary to the Women’s Mission at her church.  She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Livermore Valley BPW and is recording secretary for Tracy African American Association. In addition Clara is a life member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators and a life member of the Southern Illinois University – Carbondale Alumni Association.
 
Dr. Rouse has received numerous awards and recognitions including but not limited to: Outstanding Working Woman of Illinois and Woman of the Year from BPW, Community Champion from Silicon Graphics in CA, Woman of the Year from Tracy California Women’s Forum as well as numerous local, state and national awards as an outstanding educator. Dr. Clara Coleman Rouse has been a keynote speaker around the country.
 
In her spare time, Dr. Rouse enjoys traveling, entertaining and reading.
 
The morning will also highlight entertainment from Kaskaskia College students and staff.
 
The public is invited to join the students and staff at Kaskaskia College as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The celebration will be held in the Jane Knight Auditorium at 9:45 a.m.  For further information, call 618-545-3182.
