KC President Pledges Support for Entrepreneurship

Kaskaskia College President Dr. Jim Underwood has taken the Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge through the National Association of Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges.  Through the pledge, presidents of community colleges throughout the country pledge to take five action steps that will increase their focus on entrepreneurship and the impact these colleges have on the economic well-being of the communities they serve.

Kaskaskia College is one of 11 community colleges from across the country to win the 2013 NACCE Entrepreneurial College in Action Grant Competition, funded by the Coleman Foundation. The winning colleges receive grants to support programs to build their capacity for promoting entrepreneurship in the communities they serve. The Coleman Foundation is a private, independent grant maker that has donated over $50 million to improve the quality of entrepreneurship education, promote the option of self-employment, and help create a new generation of business owners.

“Kaskaskia College is dedicated to the economic growth of our district,” Dr. Underwood said.  “With our Small Business Development Center, our South Central Illinois Growth Alliance, and the business incubator programs in place at our education centers, as well as other initiatives, we are committed to growing our local economy by giving startup businesses the best chance to succeed and by training a local workforce to attract new businesses and expand current businesses.”

The Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge is in response to the Obama Administration’s Startup America call to action to stimulate economic growth state by state by encouraging entrepreneurs to start their own businesses. NACCE is a founding affiliate of the Startup America Partnership, an alliance of the country’s most innovative entrepreneurs, corporations, universities, foundations, and other leaders.

The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) is an organization of educators, administrators, presidents and entrepreneurs, focused on inciting entrepreneurship in their community and on their campus. NACCE has two main goals: 1. Empower the college to approach the business of running a community college with an entrepreneurial mindset, and 2. Grow the community college’s role in supporting job creation and entrepreneurs in their local ecosystem.  More information can be found at www.nacce.com.
