The Kaskaskia College Athletic Department announced last night that that Miranda Burroughs of Poplar Bluff, MO and Jacob Kampwerth of Beckemeyer were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The Dr. James and Roxie Underwood Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards were announced at the College’s Annual Athletic Banquet held April 23.
Sophomore Miranda Burroughs was a starter on both the Blue Angels Soccer and basketball programs this year. This season she was named an All-American in both sports. In soccer she was named to the All-Region 24 Team and also named Region 24 Player of the Year. She finished the soccer season ranked 22nd in the nation in goals; 28th in assists; and 19th in points. She holds every offensive record in KC’s soccer history. In her two soccer seasons at KC, she scored 46 goals and had 22 assists. Miranda was also a two-year starter for the basketball team. She received multiple awards this season including All-Conference and All-Region 1st Team. Her plans after graduation are still not decided but she is being recruited by several colleges.
Miranda is also a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Phi Theta Kappa.
According to KC soccer coach Joe Basch, “Miranda is a pleasure to coach and be around. She has a positive outlook on everything, is extremely hard working on and off the field and court, and is always eager to help her teammates, professors and classmates."
Sophomore Jacob Kampwerth is a member of the Blue Devils Basketball Team. As a freshman he was awarded the Most Improved Player Award and this year was named to the All-Conference and All-Region 2nd Team. He was also awarded the Rebounding Award this year. He will be transferring to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville to major in Engineering.
KC basketball coach Brian Hancock says “Jacob is a very self-motivated individual in the classroom and on the court. He is a very hard worker who has maintained a high GPA in our Pre-Engineering Program and has earned the respect of our conference coaches by his nomination for All-Conference and All-Region Awards for his sophomore basketball season. He has made tremendous strides over the past two seasons as a basketball player while providing strong leadership to our group this season”.
