A reception was held at Kaskaskia College’s Lifelong Learning center Wednesday, March 27 to honor the 2013 Blue Angels Basketball team and KC soccer star Miranda Burroughs.
The Blue Angles had a historic season in 2012-2013. The team finished the year with a 24-9 overall record, 13-3 in the Great Rivers Conference. The 13 conference wins secured them the outright regular season conference championship and Coach of the Year honors for head coach Shane Larson.
The Blue Angels went on to qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament with a win over rival Wabash Valley in the semi-finals of the Region 24 Tournament. Winning conference and qualifying for the national tournament was only the second time in school history for both achievements.
The Blue Angels also received individual awards. Miranda Burroughs (Poplar Bluff, MO) and Brandi Riddle (St. Louis, MO) received all-conference honors. Miranda and Brandi, along with Alex Stanford (Country Club Hills, IL) also received All-Region 24 recognition. Miranda, Brandi, and Adrina LaVern (Anchorage, Alaska) were named to the All-Region 24 Tournament Team.
“It is great for the individual recognition the kids received,” Coach Larson said, “but it was through a team effort that these individuals were recognized. The success over the course of the entire season shows how this was a team endeavor, not the accomplishments of a single individual. I am very proud of what this group of young women accomplished as a team.”
Other team members include: Karlisa Harris (Park Forest, IL), Anessia Brown (E. St. Louis, IL), Jessica Green (Mt. Vernon), Makeba Elliott (Park Forest, IL), Kelssy De la Cruz Trass (St. Thomas, VI), Petra Elbert (E. St. Louis, IL), Kienna Wharton (Indianapolis, IN), Jessica Warren (Olympia Fields, IL), Ashley Bates (Park Forest, IL), Takeshia Gibson (Cahokia, IL) and Hanna Bergkoetter (Okawville, IL)
Burroughs was also honored at the reception for being named to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer All-American Team. She is the first female soccer player at Kaskaskia College to attain this honor.
Miranda adds this accolade to her already long list of awards. In her career at KC, she has been named First Team All-Region as both a freshman and a sophomore, and was named Region Player of the Year this fall. Miranda finished the season nationally ranked in three categories. She was ranked 22nd in goals scored, 28th in assists, and 19th in points. She amassed 46 goals and 22 assists for a total of 114 points in her two seasons as a Blue Angel Soccer player. As a freshman, Miranda was also named Kaskaskia College Female Athlete of the Year.
Addressing the teams assembled for the reception, Dr. Jim Underwood, President of Kaskaskia College, said, “My message for all of you is about commitment. When you set goals in life, be they in sports, in academics, in your profession, or in your personal life, it takes a certain level of commitment to achieve those goals. The Blue Angels team and Miranda Burroughs have shown that level of commitment. Always strive for excellence, and remember that excellence takes commitment.”
